What is the POPI Act designed to do?
The Protection of Personal Information Act (Act 4 of 2013) is there to protect the personal information of individuals and juristic entities and ensure that companies who store and process that information do so within the framework of the Law.
How does this affect you?
President Jacob Zuma signed the Protection of Personal Information Act (“POPI”) into law on 27th November 2013. The actual effective date of the Act is still to be determined by the President. This is subject to the appointment of an Information Regulator. From that date, organisations will have one year to demonstrate compliance to the legislation.
